MOSQUITOES ARE CONSIDERED THE DEADLIEST "ANIMAL" IN THE WORLD
Malaria is caused by a parasite that lives in mosquitoes.

The parasite is passed via the mosquito's saliva when the insect bites someone.

West Nile and other viruses are passed the same way.
Mosquitoes are solely to blame for the propagation of Malaria, which affects 216 million people every year.
It is estimated malaria kills more than one million people every year, primarily in Africa.

THERE ARE MORE MOSQUITOES ON THIS PLANET THAN HUMANS
There are 100 trillion mosquitoes from 3,450 different species ready to suck your blood.

ONLY FEMALE MOSQUITOES BITE
Blood provides the protein that mosquito eggs need for development.

MOSQUITOES ARE ATTRACTED TO THE SCENTS EMITTED BY HUMANS
Mosquitoes can smell human breath.
They have receptors on their antennae that detect the carbon dioxide released when we exhale.

Those plumes of CO2 rise into the air, acting as trails that the mosquitoes follow to find the source.

Sweat helps mosquitoes choose their victims.
Our skin produces more than 340 chemical odours, and some of them smell like dinner to mosquitoes.
It is believed that mosquitoes are fond of octenol, a chemical released in sweat, as well as cholesterol, folic acid, certain bacteria, skin lotions, and perfume.

MOSQUITOES DETECT CO2 25 METRES AWAY
Carbon dioxide, which humans and other animals produce, is the key signal to mosquitoes that a potential blood meal is near.
They've developed a keen sensitivity to CO2 in the air.
Once a female senses CO2 in the vicinity, she flies back and forth through the CO2 plume until she locates her victim.

MOSQUITOES INJECT YOU WITH THEIR SALIVA
Before sucking your blood, the female mosquito injects you with her saliva, which contains an anticoagulant, allowing your blood to flow freely into her.
This is how mosquitoes transmit diseases.
The little red bump you get from a mosquito bite is actually your body's reaction to a protein contained in mosquito saliva.
Mosquito saliva contains some of the same ingredients as rat poison.

MOSQUITOES FLY SLOWLY
Mosquitoes average a flight speed of 1 to 1.5 miles per hour.

A MOSQUITO'S WINGS BEAT 300–600 TIMES PER SECOND
This would explain that irritating buzzing sound you hear just before a mosquito lands on you and bites.

ALL MOSQUITOES NEED WATER TO BREED... BUT NOT MUCH
Just a few inches of water is all it takes for a female to deposit her eggs.

Tiny mosquito larvae develop quickly in birdbaths, roof gutters, and old tires dumped in vacant lots.

Some species can breed in puddles left after a rainstorm.

MOSQUITOES DON'T HAVE TEETH
The females 'bite' with a long, pointed mouthpart called a proboscis.

They use the serrated proboscis to pierce the skin and locate a capillary, then draw blood through one of two tubes

A mosquito can drink up to three times its weight in blood.

Don't worry, though. It would take about 1.2 million bites to drain all the blood from your body

MOSQUITOES GENERALLY FLY BELOW 25 FEET
However, some species have also been found at extraordinary heights, including 8,000 feet up in the Himalayas.

MOSQUITOES FEED DAY AND NIGHT
Some species, like the Aedes are daytime biters, while others, like Culex, start biting at dusk and continue a few hours into dark.

Scotland attempts to establish a trading colony on the Caribbean shore of Panama

New Caledonia is intended to position the Scots to take advantage of Pacific and Atlantic trade networks

2,500 eager Scot volunteers go in the effort

Two years later 70% of the volunteers are dead from Yellow Fever, Dengue or Malaria

(their immune systems had no previous experience of these diseases

1763

France - having lost Canada to Britain - hopes to regain its position in the Americas with a new colony in what is now French Guiana

11,000 people are recruited from France and elsewhere in Europe

18 months later, 85 to 90 percent of them have died from mosquito borne diseases, Yellow Fever being the greatest single killer of their soldiers

1780 & 1781

Fighting in the southern colonies, an area widespread with Malaria, during the American war of independence the British Army suffers a malaria epidemic

At times, half the British Army are too sick to move

In 1781, the British commander moves his army north to avoid “the fatal sickness which so nearly ruined the army” the summer before

His superiors, however, ordered him to move to the tidewater

By late summer 1781, Malaria takes hold of the army once again. 51% of the army are too sick to stand duty

American and French forces pen the troops in until the British surrender in October, which, in effect, decides the outcome of the American Revolution

American militiamen, and much of the Continental Army, had grown up in the South and faced Malaria every summer of their lives

MOSQUITO LIFE CYCLE

LIFE CYCLE

Adult male mosquitoes usually live for one to two weeks. Males do not seek blood. They instead feed on nectar and plant juices.

Females can survive for around a month. They feed on nectar but also seek blood meals to find proteins vital to producing eggs.

MOSQUITO PREVENTION AROUND YOUR HOME

MOSQUITO PREVENTION AROUND YOUR HOME

UNDERSTANDING THE LIFE CYCLES OF MOSQUITOES (ABOVE) RESULTS IN AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO PREVENT THEM

REMOVE SOURCES OF STANDING WATER

Water in tire mosquito habitat
  • Mosquito lay their eggs in and around standing water
  • Eliminate sources of stagnant water
  • Turn over buckets, old tyres, trash can lids, and tarps that may allow water to accumulate

CLEAN OUT THE GUTTERS

Drainage Pipes and Gutters on a white house
  • Maintain gutter system
  • Leaves and other debris can build up in your gutter leading to water retention in the entire system
  • Mosquitoes can lay their eggs in as little as one inch of stagnant water. That clogged gutter is now a dirty , wet welcome mat for them

CHANGE WATER SOURCES WEEKLY

Lilypad in swamp area
  • Change sources of standing water, such as pet bowls, bird baths, rain barrels and plant containers at least once a week
  • This will interrupt the mosquito breeding process and help prevent any eggs laid in the water from reaching adulthood

DRAIN WATER AND FILL UP LOW AREAS

Drain water flooding streets
  • Drain any areas where water can temporarily accumulate after rainfall or excessive watering
  • If there are areas prone to water accumulation, consider filing them in with dirt to level out the surface and prevent the problem altogether

MAINTAIN POOLS AND WATER FEATURES

  • Mosquitoes any source of standing water to lay their eggs, including unmaintained swimming pools
  • Maintain the water treatment schedule and ensure water is circulating correctly
  • Water features, such as ponds, can also be problem areas for mosquitoes. Consider adding a fountain to keep the water moving
  • Minnows, feed on mosquito larvae and can help control their population

Biting flies (sand flies etc...) facts

biting flies

Members of the Ceratopogonidae family are better known as sandflies, noseeums, no-see-ums, nicnics, midge, black flies and black gnats, amongst others

Unlike the mosquito, that uses a proboscis, the above have biting, piercing and sucking mouthparts to 'gnaw' their way to blood

Of all the insects that bite humans these are probably the most widespread and definitely one of the most irritating

Biting flies

(sand flies etc...) facts

Appearance
  • Small
  • (1/3 of the size of a mosquito max. 3mm long)
  • Hairy
  • Wings held in a upright "V" shape
  • Called "sand" flies because of their colour not the habitat where they live
Sand flies drawing

Behaviour
  • 'Hop' across the skin to find a blood meal
  • Generally bite at dusk and dawn usually around the exposed areas (i.e. face, ears, arms and hands, feet and legs)
  • The saliva injected while feeding helps prevent clotting and promoting blood vessel enlargement
  • One blood meal can support the production of about 100 eggs
  • Females lay their eggs in humid soil rich in organic matter

Biting
  • Due to their small size their bite is not always felt
  • It leaves a small round, reddish bump that starts itching hours or even days later
  • The bites can become very painful and irititating

Leech facts

Size of a leech depends on the species. Some species can reach 16 inches in length.

Most leeches are usually 0.3 to 3 inches long.

Leeches have suckers on both ends of their body. Most species have three jaws equipped with small, sharp teeth.

Their teeth are even able to pierce thick skin of a hippo.

Majority of leeches eat blood. Certain species of leeches consume decaying plant material or various worms and insects.

Blood-eating leeches use their suckers to attach to the skin of various animals.

They eat blood of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish.

Leeches have huge appetite. They can ingest amount of blood that is five times bigger than their own weight.

Once they are full, leeches will detach from the victim.

Since they are able to eat a lot in a single meal, leeches can survive without food period of one year.

Although leech pierces skin and sucks a huge amount of blood, process is not painful at all.

Leeches produce anaesthetic which reduces the pain and allows undisturbed extraction of blood.

Also, leech releases anticoagulant, called hirudin, which prevents blood coagulation.

Both anticoagulant and anaesthetic produced by leech are used in medicine for the production of drug.

Leeches are used for bloodletting in medicine.

DANGER TO HUMANS

The presence of hirudin in the wound following a leech bite may cause oozing to continue for several hours. Although inconvenient, blood loss is not significant

Gut bacteria can cause wound infection. In the post-operative use of leeches this is closely monitored and dealt with by use of the appropriate antibiotic

There may also be a delayed irritation and itching after a bite

There appears to be no support for the theory that mouthparts left behind after forced removal of the leech causes this reaction

CAN LEECHES TRANSMIT DISEASE?

There is no evidence to suggest that they do

The presence of trypanosomes, (Malarial parasites), in the gut of jawless leeches has been noted, but jawed leeches do not appear to be hosts

Allergy to leech bite has been reported

Medical opinion should be sought, depending on the severity of the reaction

DEET

The higher the DEET%, the longer the
protection time.

Theoretically the effectiveness of a 20%
DEET product is the same as an 80% DEET
product, just not for as long.

Be wary of sub-20% DEET products.

Depending on the other ingredients in the
formulation, the protection time could be
short.

DEET has been proven, over 60 years of
use, to be a highly safe and effective
repellent against mosquitoes and other
biting insects.

Unlike the mosquito, that uses a proboscis,

Of all the insects that bite humans these are
probably the most widespread and definitely
one of the most irritating.

Bushman Product Range Image

ABOVE: The entire Bushman range is effective at
repelling biting insects, such as Sandflies

As all Bushman products use the active
DEET (Except for Bushman Naturals) all are equally effective at repelling the
Ceratopogonidae family, just for different
durations of time - with the possibility of the
DryGel products being ever so slightly better,
due to their thicker composition.

It's more important to ensure that you have
applied Bushman to all exposed areas of
skin - focus on areas such as your ankles,
back of legs and neck (easy places to miss
and very appealing to them) - and apply in
advanced; don't wait until you suspect you
being bitten, as often, you can't tell.

Annoying Flies Thumbnail Image

ANNOYING FLIES

Certain flies, most commonly bush flies and
blow flies, land on your face and generally
pester you because the female of
the species wants your saliva, mucus and tears;
it's how she gets her protein.

She needs it to breed and this is why she is
so persistent and so 'in your face'. It's this
persistency that makes them so annoying,
and even uncomfortable to be around.

Our PLUS pump spray and aerosol range
(green cans and bottle) have additional
ingredients to repel these type of
annoying flies.

Bushman 3 Can lineup of Bushman Products

ABOVE:The PLUS pump spray & aerosol range contain
additional repellents for annoying flies such as, Bush

Because of the way these flies behave, the
additional fly repellents successfully prevent
them landing on your face, but you can't always
stop them from flying close to your face.

However, in independent tests we found
using these products made being around
flies much more comfortable than when not
wearing it.

BUSHMAN HISTORY

Bushman Products

Bushman was founded in 1990 by an industrial chemist with over 35 years' experience
developing personal insect repellents.

His goal was to produce the very best repellent available.

It was developed in the tropics for the tropics and tested in 'the swamps' to ensure it was the best performing repellent in the harshest of conditions.

Since then Bushman has grown to be Australia's 'Number ONE' premium repellent, mostly through word of mouth recommendations.

Through the 1990's and 2000's Bushman products have been the subject of many independent tests where they proved their performance everytime.
