You may want to wear sunscreen with your Bushman

  • Apply the sunscreen first, then Bushman
  • Whenever you 'top up' your sunscreen, reapply Bushman
  • If you're wearing anything else on your skin, always make sure Bushman is the top 'layer'

CLOTHING

Fact:

Mosquitoes can bite through clothes. Particularly lightweight fabrics and sport style fabrics

PROBLEM:

People often only apply repellent to exposed skin, when in reality, if you're in an area of high mosquito activity a mosquito may well bite through your clothing. Thicker garments make it more difficult for a mosquito to penetrate, but lightweight fabrics, particularly sports fabrics, are no barrier to a mosquito

SOLUTION:

Be mindful of what you're wearing. If you're at risk of being bitten, and feel the clothes you're wearing aren't sufficiently thick enough to prevent a mosquito bite, wear Bushman underneath

Can I spray Bushman on my clothes?

We advise against it

Bushman products contain DEET (like the majority of repellents from other brands)

DEET is an oil and is used in the production of many things, including man made fabrics, garment colourings and finishes

So there is a risk that the DEET could damage the garment

It's more efficient to apply repellent to any skin at risk of being bitten (see above) before dressing

Accidental removal of repellent through activity & wear-and-tear

Fact:

Repellents can easily be washed, rubbed or sweated off the skin without the wearer realising

Problem:

Many repellents aren't water, sweat or rub resistant and can therefore be easily removed from the skin without the wearer realising

Solution:

One of Bushman's key benefits is the fact that it is sweat, water and rub resistant

However, just be mindful that if, for example, you've been wading through rivers, have been caught in a rainstorm or have been engaging in high-intense exercise you may have reduced your repellent's protection time.

So if / when there's an opportunity to 'top up' your Bushman, you should consider it

DON'T HESITATE TO APPLY REPELLENT

fact:

It takes time for a mosquito bite to appear

problem:
A lot of people wait until they're being bitten, or until they see or hear mosquitoes or sand-flies hovering in their vacinity and then apply their repellent. This is often too late

Signs of a bite can become apparent very quickly, sometimes it can take as longs as 15 minutes and - according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) - symptoms may occur up to 48 hours after the initial bite

A mosquito bite can cause a variety of reactions. People who have never been bitten before (primarily young children) may not react at all. Thereafter, most of us develop a tiny, itchy red bump that appears hours to days after they have been bitten and may last a few days

Solution:
If you feel you're at risk of being bitten or you're somewhere where there's a risk of presence of biting insects; apply repellent, preferably prior to stepping outside, arriving at the place of potential risk

SWIMMING WITH REPELLENT

All Bushman products are water resistant, with the DryGel products being the hardiest.

The benefit of water resistance means that the Bushman will stay on the skin through conditions such as rain showers, or wading through rivers and 'quick dips' in fresh water pools, for example

However, the longer and more intense the exposure to water the more likely it is for the repellent to be washed off / removed

It's worth reapplying repellent after any prolonged exposure to water, or where any body parts have been immersed in water

DEET

The higher the DEET%, the longer the
protection time.

Theoretically the effectiveness of a 20%
DEET product is the same as an 80% DEET
product, just not for as long.

Be wary of sub-20% DEET products.

Depending on the other ingredients in the
formulation, the protection time could be
short.

DEET has been proven, over 60 years of
use, to be a highly safe and effective
repellent against mosquitoes and other
biting insects.

BITING FLIES

Members of the Ceratopogonidae family are
better known as sandflies, noseeums,
no-see-ums, nicnics, midge, black flies and
black gnats, amongst others.

Unlike the mosquito, that uses a proboscis,
the above have biting, piercing and sucking
mouthparts to 'gnaw' their way to blood.

Of all the insects that bite humans these are
probably the most widespread and definitely
one of the most irritating.

Bushman Product Range Image

ABOVE: The entire Bushman range is effective at
repelling biting insects, such as Sandflies

As all Bushman products use the active
DEET (Except for Bushman Naturals) all are equally effective at repelling the
Ceratopogonidae family, just for different
durations of time - with the possibility of the
DryGel products being ever so slightly better,
due to their thicker composition.

It's more important to ensure that you have
applied Bushman to all exposed areas of
skin - focus on areas such as your ankles,
back of legs and neck (easy places to miss
and very appealing to them) - and apply in
advanced; don't wait until you suspect you
being bitten, as often, you can't tell.

Annoying Flies Thumbnail Image

ANNOYING FLIES

Certain flies, most commonly bush flies and
blow flies, land on your face and generally
pester you because the female of
the species wants your saliva, mucus and tears;
it's how she gets her protein.

She needs it to breed and this is why she is
so persistent and so 'in your face'. It's this
persistency that makes them so annoying,
and even uncomfortable to be around.

Our PLUS pump spray and aerosol range
(green cans and bottle) have additional
ingredients to repel these type of
annoying flies.

Bushman 3 Can lineup of Bushman Products

ABOVE:The PLUS pump spray & aerosol range contain
additional repellents for annoying flies such as, Bush

Because of the way these flies behave, the
additional fly repellents successfully prevent
them landing on your face, but you can't always
stop them from flying close to your face.

However, in independent tests we found
using these products made being around
flies much more comfortable than when not
wearing it.

BUSHMAN HISTORY

Bushman Products

Bushman was founded in 1990 by an industrial chemist with over 35 years' experience
developing personal insect repellents.

His goal was to produce the very best repellent available.

It was developed in the tropics for the tropics and tested in 'the swamps' to ensure it was the best performing repellent in the harshest of conditions.

Since then Bushman has grown to be Australia's 'Number ONE' premium repellent, mostly through word of mouth recommendations.

Through the 1990's and 2000's Bushman products have been the subject of many independent tests where they proved their performance everytime.
